Buen Camino - beyond the journey cover
Buen Camino – beyond the journey is the inspiring tale of Ana, a young woman who walks 780 Kilometres across Spain on the medieval Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail, searching for an end to her childhood pain.
Through an unlikely friendship with Richard, an older, gentle man in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, Ana learns to leave the past behind and to live in the here and now. The two become improbable friends: one who cannot remember and one who cannot forget.
Buen Camino – beyond the journey won the first prize in ‘A Woman’s Write Good Read Novel Competition.’ This is Thea Hughes’ debut novel.
The character Richard, in the novel, is inspired by a man with Alzheimer’s who runs a refugio on the Camino de Santiago. For more information on his red-doored refugio (like the one Ana and Richard renovate in the book), see Casabanderas
“A first-time novelist, she writes with verve and enough plot to keep you whipping through the pages. Hughes lets the everyday details of life on the Camino build, over its 250-odd pages, into a strangely satisfying novel. Buen Camino: Beyond the Journey not only answers my question: “What on Earth do they get out of it?” but also provides a fascinating example of why, as Robert Louis Stevenson wrote, “To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive’” Carroll du Chateau, The Weekend Herald.
